An old shed or garage on your property can become an unsightly mess if not maintained. Many sheds were built by homeowners, and were not designed & built to last for a long time. We found that the first sign a shed is ready to fall apart is the floor starting to rot out.
There are many ways to demolish & remove a shed, the most popular of which I have listed below:
- Excavator Deconstruction
- Skid Steer Deconstruction
- Deconstruction by Hand
- Truck and Chain
Each of these methods have their pros and cons, and really depend on the risk, cost, and time that the person demolishing the shed is willing to incur. We have found that for 90% of sheds, demolishing by hand is the most efficient/clean way to do it.
For large sheds & garages, using a mini excavator & dumpster is the best way to quickly demolish the shed or garage and clean up the area.
How To Demolish A Shed – Step By Step
With the right equipment and experience, demolishing and cleaning up after a shed deconstruction project can be done in as little as 5-6 hours! Below are the steps for general shed/small garage removal:
- Obtain all necessary permits prior to beginning deconstruction
- Ensure all electric utilities are disconnected prior to beginning deconstruction
- Most sheds are supported by the roof structure. Begin by cutting the roof in half with a sawzall to weaken the shed structure
- Cut the roof of the shed into pieces, and begin loading into a dumpster
- Cut the 4 walls where they join, and they should all fall over with a little push. Load up the walls into the dumpster
- For the floor, cut it in half with a sawzall, then cut into pieces. Use a prybar to pull the floor pieces up, and load into the dumpster.
- Clean up the job site of small debris
Shed Removal Cost
The cost to demolish a shed depends on the method of deconstruction and disposal. The cost breakdown of an average shed deconstruction & removal project is below:
Total cost to demolish & remove a shed by yourself: $475
How to make a shed last forever
In our business, we have demolished thousands of old sheds. One common issue we have found is common with almost all sheds placed on dirt or block.
These sheds tend to rot after approximately 15-20 years, and they are beyond repair at that point.
The best way to make your shed last indefinitely is to pour a concrete pad and place the shed on it. We have rarely seen a shed placed on a concrete pad rot out. Many of these sheds are over 50 years old, and still look great with minimal maintenance.
