All boats regardless of how well-maintained will come to the end of their usable lives at one point or another. Unlike junk cars, old boats have negative value which means it costs money to get rid of them.
For example, if you have an old car you no longer want, there are companies who will buy it from you for $100-$500 for the scrap value. Unfortunately for old boats, their hulls are very heavy and need to be disposed of at a landfill. This can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the size of the boat.
Free Boat Removal Options
Fear not, we will go over 3 different ways you can dispose of your old boat for absolutely zero cost! The only thing it will cost you is your time and a bit of elbow grease.
Option 1: Cut it up
The hardest option to dispose of your old vessel is to cut it up into pieces. This will be a multiple-weekend project, so be warned! The tools you will need are listed below:
- Sawzall
- Sawzall blades
- Heavy-duty dust mask
- Gloves
- Protective goggles
To start, begin cutting the boat into small chunks. This will take hours to complete, so be patient! The best blade to use for this type of work is a heavy-duty wood cutting blade. It chews through the fiberglass hull like nothing else.
Once you get to the engine/propeller drive area, you can use a metal blade on your sawzall to cut the engine out of the boat. The engine/drive system can be scrapped, bringing in around $60 worth of scrap value.
To dispose of all the fiberglass for free, you will need a lot of patience. You can put 2-3 bags of the figerglass chunks out with your trash over a period of 2-3 months. While it takes time, you saved yourself hundreds of dollars by cutting up your boat.
Option 2: Donate it
If your boat is still in good shape and runs, you may be able to donate it and use the deduction on your taxes! There are services out there that will remove your boat for free and auction it off, then use the proceeds for charity.
All you need to do is send them pictures & information on the boat. If they are interested, they will remove your old boat for you!
Sounds too good to be true? Many times it is, we have heard from many customers who have had poor experiences with these type of organizations.
With that said, it is still a legitimate option for disposing of your old boat with zero cost you you.
Option 3: Give it away
The final option to make your old boat disappear is to give it away to someone on Facebook or Craigslist.
There are mechanically-inclined people who will take your old boat off your hands for absolutely free! Even if it has a blown motor or damaged hull, they will take it and fix it. Other times, these individuals will strip the boat for parts.
One downside to this is many of these people want the title to the boat, so they can resell it. In addition, the trailer will need to be in roadworthy shape so they can tow the boat home.
A major risk to giving your boat away without transferring the title is if they strip the boat of valuables and dump the hull somewhere. Technically it is still your boat, so you will be responsible for getting rid of it still.

This is an excellent company to deal with. I highly recommend! They were punctual, friendly and communicative throughout the entire process. From the first call, to the estimate, to the contract details, to start day/time, to what to expect day of and clean up day. It is very hard to find this level of customer service anymore! We hired them to tear down an old cinderblock/wood garage. It was right on the property line and didn’t have much room for error. A+ took the garage down no problem and did a great job with haul away and cleanup. You can tell they know their stuff. Sal always returned calls and emails. We got a fair price and a job well done! I definitely recommend and would work with them again if the need ever arises.
