Demolishing an Old Garage

We were hired by a customer in Wilkes-Barre who had an old, garage on his property. He was getting fines from the city because the garage had structural damage. Unfortunately, this garage was not repairable and the decision was made to demolish it. Demolishing a garage may seem like the nuclear option, but is often times more cost-effective than trying to repair it.
This was a tricky job because there was very little access to the rear of the property where the old garage sat. In addition, the garage was nested between 2 other buildings. The garage wall was compromised, which made the demolition process even trickier.
To safely take down an old garage, we use the mantra “bigger is better”. What that means is that it is wise to use the largest machine possible to demolish a structure because you have more control.
When you have a collapsing garage sitting between two other buildings, losing control of the garage can be devastating. We decided to bring in a Komatsu PC88 Excavator, which is the perfect sized machine for projects such as these.
Taking Down the Garage

As you can see in the video above, a lot of precaution and safety measures were taken to ensure this demolition project was a success. We had to constantly monitor the position of the garage in relation to the other buildings. The trick was getting the garage to fall directly forward without “blowing out” the side walls.
Debris Cleanup

Once the garage was on the ground, the next step was to clean it up. Normally, we place a 40 yard dumpster right next to the debris pile and simply load it up. Due to the tight access of the driveway and house, we were only able to get 15 yard dumpsters in there. This required us to “grind up” the material more so it would all fit in 4, 15 yard dumpsters.
The next step was to clean up all the old cinderblock from the foundation walls. We brought in our Caterpillar 262D skid steer to assist with this part of the project. Within 2 hours, the whole pile of cinderblocks was removed and hauled away.
A New Yard

Now that the garage was demolished and all the debris was cleaned up, our customer can enjoy his new yard. We left the concrete pad so there is a safe, solid space to park vehicles. In addition, his yard doubled in size! Demolishing an old, unsafe structure on your property can completely transform your land as well as increase property values!
