If you have an old fence on your property, you may be wondering how to take it down. While it may sound easy to demolish a fence, it is anything but. Underneath most fences are large concrete footers, over 3 feet long!
How to remove a fence
While it is possible to remove a fence by hand, it is extremely labor-intensive and time consuming. We recommend using equipment such as a mini excavator to remove the fence. This allows you to easily dig up the footers once the fence has been removed.
To start, begin cutting the horizontal fence posts at each vertical post. This allows you to more easily maneuver the fencing when it is being dismantled. After that, grab the posts with the excavator (preferably with a hydraulic thumb). Pull the posts directly up and out of the ground. Cut off the posts where they go into the concrete footers, and you are almost done!
After pulling up the concrete footers, you will need to backfill the holes with something. Our favorite suggestion is to reuse your concrete footers as clean fill. Dig a slightly larger hole and bury the concrete footer in the ground. Cover it back up with dirt, and it was like it was never even there!
Cost to remove a fence
The cost to remove & dispose of a fence varies depending on what equipment and tools are required. In addition, you may have to factor in disposal fees if your fence is not made of metal.
Typical fence removal costs:

- $350 dumpster rental & disposal fees
As you can see, removing a fence yourself is not always a cheap option. The fence removal project described above costs over $850 plus a day of work!

From the first call, to the estimate, to the contract details, to start day/time, to what to expect day of and clean up day. It is very hard to find this level of customer service anymore! We hired them to tear down an old cinderblock/wood garage. It was right on the property line and didn’t have much room for error. A+ took the garage down no problem and did a great job with haul away and cleanup. You can tell they know their stuff. Sal always returned calls and emails. We got a fair price and a job well done! Absolutely amazing! Highly recommended! I recently moved to Pennsylvania and purchased a fixer upper in Luzern County. I had a large pile of debris from the house that I needed to get rid of. I called the Salvation Army but they couldn’t pick up for a month. I called A Plus & they came two days later. The Two young men who came to pick up were polite, respectful & very efficient. The 3 man crew did a fantastic job in clearing out and disposing of several large and small items that still remained after a 2 day estate sale. Items removed included beds and mattresses, 3 couches, bedroom chest of drawers, old refrigerator and electric stove, computer desk, old and very heavy television, several tools plus much more.Very courteous workers and owner was great to work with.
